Windshield Tinting: Is XPEL Prime XR Blue or XR Plus Worth It? (2026 Edition)

Today, I’d like to talk about windshield tinting and why XPEL Prime XR Blue or XR Plus can be a great choice for your vehicle.

If you’re looking for a more comfortable cabin, better heat rejection, and added protection for your vehicle’s interior, this article is for you.



Why Tint Your Windshield?

When people think about window tint, they usually focus on the side windows. However, your windshield is actually one of the largest sources of heat entering your vehicle.

Adding XPEL Prime XR Blue or XR Plus to your windshield can make a noticeable difference in overall comfort—especially when combined with XR Plus on the side windows.



Why XR Blue and XR Plus Work So Well on Windshields

Because the windshield is the largest piece of glass on most vehicles, it’s responsible for allowing a significant amount of heat and UV rays into the cabin.

Applying XR Blue or XR Plus offers several important benefits:


Outstanding Heat Rejection

Both films help reduce infrared heat, keeping your cabin noticeably cooler during hot weather.


UV Protection

They block harmful UV rays, helping protect your skin while also reducing fading and aging of your vehicle’s interior.

This is one of the reasons we often recommend windshield tint for classic cars as well.


Excellent Optical Clarity

Unlike darker traditional window films, XR Blue and XR Plus maintain excellent visibility during both daytime and nighttime driving.



How Much Difference Does It Make?

Every vehicle is different, but here’s a simple way to think about the improvement.

Without any window film

Heat level: 10

Side windows tinted only

Heat level: approximately 6

Windshield plus side windows tinted

Heat level: approximately 2

While these numbers are intended only as an easy-to-understand comparison—not laboratory measurements—they reflect what many of our customers experience after installation.

Adding windshield tint not only makes summer driving much more comfortable, but it can also help retain heat inside the cabin during colder months, allowing your heater to work more efficiently.

A Personal Story

Here’s a funny one—my wife refuses to ride in any of my cars until the windshield has been tinted with XR Blue or XR Plus.

Once you get used to it, it’s surprisingly difficult to go back.



Which Should You Choose: XR Blue or XR Plus?

The short answer is you’ll likely be happy with either one.

If your driving is mostly around town, even if you live in a hot climate, and you rarely spend more than 30 minutes driving directly into the afternoon sun, we believe XR Blue is more than enough.

On the other hand, if you frequently drive in places such as Arizona, Nevada, or California’s desert regions, and often spend 30 minutes or more driving directly into the afternoon sun, XR Plus is worth considering.

That said, for side windows, we generally recommend XR Plus. In our experience, the improvement in heat rejection is more noticeable on the side windows than on the windshield.

Things to Keep in Mind

While windshield tint offers many advantages, there are a few things every customer should know.


Slight Optical Distortion on Highly Curved Windshields

Some vehicles with heavily curved windshields may show a slight amount of optical distortion depending on the viewing angle.

This is not unique to XR Blue or XR Plus—it’s simply a characteristic of applying any film to curved automotive glass.


Slightly Reduced Brightness at Night

Although these films are very light, headlights may appear slightly dimmer during nighttime driving.

Think of it as about 95% of the original brightness compared to untreated glass.

For most drivers, especially in well-lit urban areas, the difference is barely noticeable.



Should You Tint All of Your Windows?

For the best overall comfort, we generally recommend tinting all of the windows.

Doing so creates more balanced heat rejection throughout the cabin while maximizing UV protection.

However, every driver has different priorities.


If You Mainly Use the Front Seats

Tinting the windshield along with the driver and passenger windows offers excellent comfort for everyday driving.


If You’re Unsure About Windshield Tint

Starting with just the front side windows is also a perfectly reasonable option.

Many customers experience the benefits there first and decide later whether they’d like to add windshield tint.
